Background

My PT Hub is an online web and mobile app that enables personal trainers, coaches, and gym owners to manage their clients with ease. You can create workout and nutrition plans tailored to each client while tracking their progress and achievements.

Challenge

The new design needed to accomplish several things: make it easier for users to find information, improve glance-ability, and communicate a user's progress in a more compelling way.

Research & Production

I started by reviewing the existing platform. We needed to understand how our customers interacted with the platform, what they were doing on it, and what they needed the most. I also looked at the list of requests customers had made since we launched, looking for any common themes.

Within those goals, we then scoped out new features that would make the platform more useful for our customers—and more profitable for us.

Desktop shell design

It was decided that in order to collaborate with our Product team we would need a scalable design system that can work from mobile to desktop.

Our design system was called KILO. We developed KILO to have the same look and feel across all devices, including iOS, Android and the web platform. This meant that when creating components for the app for Apple or Android users, it would look exactly the same on both platforms.

I started by designing a base layer for all of our designs that we could use as a starting point when developing new features. In addition to this base layer, we also created an additional layer which allows us to quickly iterate on any new design ideas without having to worry about compatibility issues on API endpoints.

Outcome

Visual consistency has been a big focus for My PT Hub, and it paid off. We continued to develop and launch new features more effectively, which helped us launch new products faster than ever before.

We were also able to build stronger relationships with fitness influencers like Jamie Alderton and Charlie Johnson Fitness, as well as peers from businesses such as Gym Group, Virgin Active and PureGym. This helped us reach new audiences in a way that is both authentic and effective during our launch event.

Launch Event

V3 was launched in October 2019, and the new product structure resulted in a price increase. We set a goal of transitioning half the 83,000 active trainers within 6 months to the new product.

Acquisition

As of November 2020, My PT Hub, which served over 83,000 trainers and 1.3 million clients, was acquired by Evercommerce. The acquisition was part of an effort to expand the company's reach and include more fitness professionals in their network.
